The 1950s could be classed as the Rock ‘n’ Roll Years..certainly it was the era that appealed to teenagers growing up after the war years. The mix of styles excited a new generation of music listeners.

However R’n’R was a popularisation of the Rhythm & Blues performed by the blues shouters from the late ‘40s and early 50’s, with R’n’R becoming prominent from the mid-50s onwards, although the established bands and artists from the 40s still had a hold on the charts and media. The ‘50s also gave rise to skiffle in the UK which was based on the early folk blues songs of the USA and was a launching pad for many British artists in the 50s and 60s. 6.5 Special was instrumental in bringing this new music to British audiences. It is worth noting that ‘Shake Rattle & Roll’ was a hit for Bill Haley in Britain at the start of 1955 before ‘Rock Around the Clock’ later in the year.

Teen ballads made their mark later in the ‘50s as the record companies found that a softer approach to R’n’R was good for business and teenagers were a major mover in this field.

Although Britain was slow to make it’s own mark until later in the decade, some acts later became big stars and others were to become major artists in the ‘60s.
