The popularity of smooth jazz, soul and funk as well as disco continued in the ‘70s. Rock music was still developing in different styles. Punk rock threatened the accepted order from the mid to late years of the decade. Reggae featured in plenty of the punk bands’ songs and performances.
There was a general acceptance that the ‘60s were over and although the festival scene thrived in the early years, it soon became unmanageable and costly.
Singer-songwriters (Paul Simon, Don McLean, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, James Taylor, Carole King, Kris Kristofferson for example) and country rock (Willie Nelson, Glen Campbell, Waylon Jennings and others) found a new and enthusiastic audience as it demonstrated a new, more serious, approach with the younger generation.
Hard rock emerged from the ‘60s and became universally popular though British bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Queen, Deep Purple etc. in the early years. Arena rock, prog rock, blues rock, new wave, glam rock also shared the era with disco becoming one of the most important genres.
Rod Stewart, ABBA, Elton John, Slade, Sweet, David Bowie, Roxy Music, T-Rex were major artists with others, providing an additional diversity with pop music.
