Popular music in the UK in the ‘80s followed on from 1970s post-punk and new wave. A crossover between pop and rock, the use of electronic music and the introduction of MTV produced chart success for a number of bands and artists through synth-pop and, in the early ‘80s, New Romantics.
Synth-pop was a result of the synthesiser dominating music through artists such as Gary Numan, It also had an effect in the emergence of New Romantics, firstly through London clubs such as Blitz and Billy’s at the end of the ‘70s and extending to other cities through the first part of the ‘80s.
Inspired by David Bowie and Roxy Music, New Romantics developed their own fashion style - flamboyant and glam using cosmetics and based on the late 18th and early 19th centuries’ Romantic periods, although this fashion trend didn’t last long and ended by the mid-80s.
Later in the decade pop and indie rock dominated the charts.
