As with the ‘80s, rock music was again popular along with teen-pop, dance, soul, jazz, funk, reggae, rap, urban R&B. Britpop, Alternative Rock, Electronic Dance (including Rave and Drum & Base),
Britpop was a counter-culture movement reflecting the experiences of British youth, through bands such as Oasis, Blur, Suede, Ash, Pulp, Supergrass and many more. These groups built on music from the ‘60s through to the ‘80s.
One of the biggest pop acts globally was the Spice Girls, leading to success for other Girl Groups like All Saints and the Cranberries. Later in the decade, Boy-bands included Take That, Westlife, Boyzone and East 17.
Ballad singers became popular through artists such as George Michael, Robert Palmer, Sinead O’Connor and Roxette.
Electronic music moved on with acts such as Massive Attack, Morcheeba, Portishead and Orbital.
Kylie Minogue continued her late ‘80s success throughout the 90s along with Pop-Rock bands Crowded House, INXS, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, R.E.M.
