A short but inspiring period in pop culture, the New Romantic movement mainly centred on the years 1979 to 1981, although many artists carried  on their music in the 80s and 90s.

Emerging from London and Birmingham nightclubs such as The Blitz and Billys, they were influenced by David Bowie and Roxy Music with fashions inspired by glam rock and the Romantic era of late 18th and early 19th centuries.

A reaction to punk led to this flamboyant style, including cosmetic styling,  which later gave way to sharp suits.

The music was a  result of the extensive use of synthesizers in rock and pop and was known as synth-pop . Synth-pop was already used in progressive rock and disco during the 1960s and 1970s through artists like Kraftwerk, Brian Eno and Yellow Magic Orchestra.

The introduction of dance beats to the sterile electronic sounds produced a warmer sound which was a more successful sound.

These acts contributed to the Second British Invasion of the USA, mainly as a result of the intoduction of MTV and the artists use of videos.

Although there was a revival in the mid-90s, the New Romantic era was over by the mid-80s.
