A Taste of Soul & Motown with Eddy Edmondson
Like so many of us, Eddy had a lucky break when he was a teenager, that changed his life. A friend persuaded him to try the local youth club in Kendal. As he walked through the door he heard a sound that changed his life Otis Redding – These arms of mine. It just so happened that one of the leaders was a huge soul fan. So started Eddy’s love affair with our music.
As soon as he got a car and passed his test Eddy started a mobile disco – The Sound of Soul, playing in the local pubs mainly. Then in 1970 started a Soul Night at The Brewery in Kendal. It was a packer and run successfully for about a year until he moved to The IBIS Club in Kendal, every Thursday night for the next 5 years.
He was a regular at The Twisted Wheel, Wigan Casino and Blackpool Mecca and visited most of the Northern Clubs over the year
During a holiday in Tenerife in 1997, after spending the day round the pool, having a nice meal he and Shirley found that there was nothing they wanted to do. They weren’t into Karaoke or Elvis Presley impersonators, so they would sit on the balcony drinking cocktails watching the world go by, listening to the music that they loved. It was then when Eddy said “ there must be other Soul fans here in Tenerife now, who like us want somewhere to go” When they returned home he set about organising a holiday for Soul fans to Tenerife and in the November of 1998, 60 people went to Soul in the Sun. 38 events later over 1000 people attend each year.
Eddy has been DJing for around 50 years and in the last 25 years has been fortunate to DJ at most of the big events and clubs in the North of England. His love of rare 70’s Soul Music led him to join forces with Steve Plumb, and for the past 10 years have run the successful So Soulful 70’s in Leyland.
He started presenting on the radio back in 1999 on Kendal Radio Station, then to become Lakeland Radio. In 2007 he moved to Solar Radio where his Sunday night “A Taste of Soul” grew in popularity each week.
He has been married to Shirley for 49 years, and has two grown up children Nicola & Steven, a granddaughter Keira who is 14 and 4 year old twin boys William & Sam. His hobbies are Liverpool FC, golf, fishing, bird watching and has recently started bee keeping.
Eddy is now delighted to be in at the start of the exciting venture and looks forward to many years at Epic Radio.
