Teen pop, dance pop, alternative rock, electronic music, rave, house, techno, ska, indie rock, grunge, heavy metal and other genres built on the progression of popular music from the 70s and 80s.

Singer-songwriters made a comeback after their 70s successes.

Urban pop, contemporary R&B, drum and bass all featured in this decade.

From the late 80s and into the 90s the Manchester club scene blossomed and became known as Madchester.

Britpop also emerged as a major force in the early 90s and reflected the lives of British youth. By the end of the decade the trend was towards a more rock based music.

Boy bands and girl groups were starting to dominate the charts by the mid-90s with the Spice Girls proving commercially successful on both sides of the Atlantic.

Many artists emerged from the teen acts and built successful solo careers.

More to come in future programs on this decade.
